They’re Just Like Us: Celebrities Who’ve Worn Braces
It’s easy to assume that those famous faces in the spotlight were born with a naturally beautiful smile.
You’d be surprised to know that many entertainers, models — even athletes — have had braces or Invisalign at some point in their lives.
Many celebrities use braces to address crooked or overcrowded teeth, or a misaligned jaw, early in their careers, but some wait until later.
In fact, of the 4 million people in the U.S. who wear braces, 1 million are adults.
Some celebrities who wore braces as kids had to get them again as adults (Cindy Crawford, Faith Hill).
There are even some celebrities who elect to get braces as a fashion statement (Gwen Stefani) or as a sign of solidarity with their younger fans (Beyonce).
You don’t have to be a public figure to take your oral health seriously. Straightening your teeth is both a cosmetic and a health benefit.
Teeth that are too close together are harder to brush and floss, so you’re at a higher risk for gum disease and tooth decay.
If teeth or jaws aren’t aligned properly, you may have a hard time biting and chewing your food, which can cause your teeth to wear out very quickly.
In some cases, misalignment can make you more prone to injuring your front teeth, especially if you play sports.
Orthodontics has come a long way, and now the traditional metal braces are no longer the only option. Braces can appear more subtle if you elect to get clear braces. Or you can embrace the opportunity to show off your personality with colored bands with traditional metal braces.
There is also a clear aligner teeth straightening option, Invisalign. Invisalign is a transparent, plastic form of dental braces used to straighten teeth.
i-Orthodontics offers a variety of these options to fit your needs and accommodate your preferences.

Celebrity Kids & Teens with Braces
Kendall Jenner got traditional wire braces at age 13, followed by clear braces at age 17. Today, the 22-year-old flashes her million-dollar smile on the runway, on tv, and on social media.
Wearing braces as a kid didn’t stop Angelina Jolie from walking the red carpet with her famous actor father, Jon Voight. When her braces came off she began modeling and eventually acting. In addition to being an Oscar-winning actress, Jolie lives life smiling as an active humanitarian who has served as a Special Envoy to the United Nations.
Tennis powerhouses and sisters Venus and Serena Williams both had braces as kids on the tennis court. That didn’t slow them down on their way to the top of the competitive tennis world. In addition to traditional braces, Serena Williams later got Invisalign as a 16-year-old, and the following year she won her first Grand Slam title at the 1999 U.S. Open.
Justin Bieber was discovered via his YouTube channel when he was 13 years old. His cover song performances got him noticed quickly by a talent manager, but his fans adored his willingness to openly share his typical teen struggles. When he got Invisalign at age 16, he discussed his experience with the aligners — and his satisfaction with the results — on his YouTube channel. His results came quickly by sticking to his regimen: wearing them 22 hours a day, and removing them only for eating and brushing teeth.
Emma Watson got her first set of braces to straighten her teeth, before she began her role in the first Harry Potter film. She returned to wearing braces during the hiatus between filming the third and fourth Potter movies.
The British Royal Family has their fair share of experience wearing braces — as kids and adults. Both Prince William and younger brother Prince Harry wore braces as teenagers. Prince Harry had braces on his bottom teeth for at least a decade to straighten his teeth. Prince William switched to a permanent support for his bottom teeth, which has been in place throughout his adulthood.
Cindy Crawford relied on braces as a child and adult. As a kid in the 70’s, she had the traditional metal braces to correct her overbite and crooked teeth. In 1992 she got braces again at age 24 as her modeling career began to skyrocket, and just in time for her iconic Pepsi commercial.
Other celebrities who wore braces as kids include Drew Barrymore, Zendaya Coleman, Cameron Diaz, Jodi Foster, Gwenyth Paltrow, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Emma Stone.
Celebrity Adults with Braces and Invisalign
Not all celebrities get braces because they have to. Beyoncé sported metal braces with colorful bands in 2011 to show support for her younger fans who wear them.
His megawatt smile is his signature feature, so it’s no surprise that Tom Cruise has invested a lot of time and money in his teeth. You can see in his earlier films that he had some misaligned and discolored teeth. At the age of 40, Cruise flashed his braces proudly at the 2002 premiere of his action movie Minority Report. They were subtle thanks to being clear braces.
The iconic Oprah Winfrey is known for touting self-acceptance, but with her face plastered on every screen — and on every cover of her eponymous O magazine — she felt it was time to upgrade her natural teeth (which she admitted made her self-conscious). By relying on Invisalign, she didn’t have to worry about receiving any extra attention.
Gwen Stefani couldn’t afford braces when she was younger. She opted for traditional metal braces as a fashion statement in 1999 at the age of 30.
Chris Rock wore metal braces after working on the 1997 film Lethal Weapon. Though the gap in his front teeth was a recognizable feature, he was excited to use his film earnings to invest in a lasting smile.
Faith Hill admitted that her neglectful attitude towards her retainer as a kid ultimately led her to get braces all over again at age 45 in 2012. Braces were a family affair at the time, and Hill wore them proudly along with her daughters Gracie and Maggie.
If you’re considering orthodontics before your wedding day, you’re in the same company as Katherine Heigl and Kate Middleton (Catherine Duchess of Cambridge).
Heigl wore Invisalign while shooting 27 Dresses and had to take them out between shots. Though she felt her two protruding teeth would not impact her film career, she wanted her wedding day photos to show her at her best. Before officially becoming the Duchess of Cambridge, Middleton wore Invisalign for six months leading up to her royal wedding in 2011.
Other famous adults who have worn braces include Gisele Bundchen, Nicolas Cage, Faye Dunaway, Danny Glover, Anna Kendrick, Heidi Klum, and Eva Longoria.
There are plenty of different reasons why celebrities get orthodontic treatment, and many of us can relate to those reasons. But you don’t have to be at celebrity status to get a beautiful, spotlight-worthy smile.
